0200 Who’s in your “long tail?”
Chris Anderson of Wired Magazine wrote the book, “The Long Tail” and came up with the really good metaphor - a long tail of a big animal — to describe and give meaning to the millions and millions of blogs, small websites, social networks, and forums.
The graphic here depict the head of the long tail with big, highly trafficked websites such as Yahoo, ABC, or Google. It also depicts all kinds of smaller, less-trafficked websites-the constituent elements of the long tail.
At this point, I call your attention to a new category, social media analytics. I just ran across it; I sure that I’ve overlooked it for two or three years. Social media analytics really make concept of a long tail come alive with possibilities for marketer.
Social media analytics enables us to listen and understand what’s going on among millions of blogs and forums. Wow.
It also helps answer the question, “How do we start tracking all of this user-generated content?”
